Once a used shipping container, now a modern cottage with a sauna

Blokki mini with a sauna

2022

Blokki mini is made out of a 12-meter shipping container that is shortened to 9 meters and is equipped with off-grid technology. The property is not connected to public infrastructure, it is fully self-sufficient. Electricity is made from 6 solar panels, each with a power of 450Wp/12V. The electricity generated is stored in batteries with a total capacity of 4.8kWh. The inverter adjusts the voltage to 230V. A 400W mini wind power plant serves as a backup power source. These sources work in an automatic mode. The heating is electric underfloor heating, a wood stove is used for heating in the winter months when there is little sunshine. Cooking is provided by a gas cooker. The drinking water is obtained by collecting rainwater from the roof of the house into an 800-liter tank. It is then purified using a carbon filter and a UV lamp and distributed for further use. The water is heated by a 30-liter boiler. In the event of a shortage of rainwater in the tank, the user has the option of bringing the water and pumping it into the tank with a submersible pump. An additional osmosis connection is possible for perfect purification of the water for drinking. The wastewater from the shower, sink, and kitchen sink is collected in a 200-liter tank integrated into the technical part of the cottage. Once the tank is full, it is pumped out by means of a prepared valve into another tank and taken off the property elsewhere or, if possible, discharged into the lawn. Toilet waste is collected in a replaceable cartridge. The user monitors the battery charge and the level in each tank via an app on a mobile phone or tablet. The interior is simply but efficiently furnished, equipped with a practical kitchenette, a 160 cm wide bed with storage boxes, and a full bathroom.

The second structure is a sauna made from the leftover shipping container we cut off when we made the aforementioned Blokki mini. The sauna has two parts, a front rest room, and a rear warming room equipped with a Finnish wood stove. The entrance door is intentionally in the middle of the front side so that you can see from the sauna bench into the open wild through the inner glass door. An outdoor barrel will be used for cooling down.
